Habitat

More tolerant of murky water than its black cousin; brush piles, creek channels and flooded timber.

Season by season

Spring

Pushes shallow to brush and stake beds ahead of the spawn — slip floats and tiny jigs.

Summer

Suspends over channel edges and deeper brush; slow-troll tiny jigs at set depths.

Fall

Follows shad schools along channels; small crankbaits and jigs.

Winter

Groups in deep timber; light ice tackle where lakes freeze.

What to throw

Tiny tube and curly-tail jigs, slip floats, small minnows.
